Two young paddlers Siseko Ntondini and S'fiso Cebekhulu - both members of The Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club (SCARC) - made it onto the team to represent South Africa in Tunisia for the African Youth Olympics on 29-30 September 2010.
Siseko brought home 1 gold and 3 silver medals; S'fiso came back with two medals - 1 gold and 1 silver (both competed in the U-18 category).
SCARC is an 'upliftment through sport' initiative that is changing lives in Soweto. An officially certified SED programme, the Club was established in 2003 by Brad Fisher - a founding member and current CEO of outdoor media company The ADreach Group.
Today SCARC is one of the major development forces for canoeing in South Africa. ADreach remains a key sponsor of the Club and an avid supporter of its members.
Siseko and S'fiso, both from Motsoaledi in Soweto, joined SCARC 5 years ago. They are just two of many kids whose futures look that much brighter thanks to SCARC, and the amazing contributions made by the club's dedicated sponsors.
Nkosi Mzolo, Chairman of SCARC, said: "The boys did extremely well. SCARC, its sponsors and their families are very proud of them. It was the first time they competed in another country so far from home - I thought they might be nervous and that it might affect their performance - but even this challenge did not stop them from giving their absolute best. I am very impressed, and over the moon!"
ADreach Ambassador Mike Mbanjwa (2008 Dusi Winner and mentor to SCARC paddlers), also congratulated Siseko and S'fiso on their excellent performance in Tunisia - he is very proud of these boys flying South Africa's flag high.
SCARC's vision for its members has always looked beyond the water to the creation of an environment where youngsters are equipped with life-changing skills that will see them becoming productive members of society.
